RALLY 4 READING RECAP

We are so proud of all the reading students did in February for Rally 4 Reading! As a school we read 902.9 hours, filled our "bookshelves" with more of our favorite books and celebrated at the Rally 4 Reading event.

Thank you for participating in the Rally 4 Reading activities and for encouraging kids to get excited about reading.

MICROWAVE NEEDED

The microwave in the staff lounge is no longer working, and they are looking for a new or gently used replacement. The space available is 20 inches in height and 28 inches in width. If you have one, please reach out to karey.dufresne@isd624.org.

MATOSKA ART SHOW SLIENT AUCTION IS BACK!

We are excited to reintroduce the silent auction component of the art show this year. Previously, this has been an excellent way for us to support the program and engage with our art community. Bidding will take place online during the week of the art show. Items will be showcased at the event with QR codes for bidding.

To support this, we are seeking donations of other art-related items for the auction, including artwork by local artists, tickets for shows, gift certificates for art classes, art supplies, etc. Have an idea or personal connection? Contact Leslie Scherer at leslie.scherer14@gmail.com.

SAVE THE DATE! This year the Matoska Art show will be Thursday, May 8th from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Promoting Well-Being and Health in Children

From the busyness of our December holidays to our cold, dark January days, it is incredibly challenging to remain BALANCED, so I worked with students on this vital attribute.

Official International Baccalaureate Definition of BALANCED:

We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives - intellectual, physical, and emotional - to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.

Here is the child-friendly definition I used with our Matoska students.

  • We are interested in a variety of things.

  • We look after our bodies and our minds.

  • We connect with other people.

  • We connect with nature.

We watched a brief video about a woodcutter who was less successful each day because he didn’t take time to sharpen his saw. We used that as a metaphor for our inability to be our best when we don’t care for ourselves. We used the acronym MAGIC to remember to be mindful, active, generous, interested in many things, and connected to nature and other people.

You can help your child develop balance in all aspects of life with activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Here are few suggestions.

  • Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques together.

  • Encourage regular physical activity and healthy eating habits.

  • Model and discuss the importance of setting boundaries and managing time effectively.

Reading together is an excellent lead-in to discussions. Picture books can help you explore the themes of balance, well-being, and self-care. Here are a few suggestions:

  • "I Am Yoga" by Susan Verde - This book introduces children to yoga and mindfulness, promoting physical and emotional balance.

  • "The Way I Feel" by Janan Cain - This book helps children understand and manage their emotions, promoting emotional balance and well-being.

  • "Sylvia's Spinach" by Katherine Pryor - This story encourages children to maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, promoting physical well-being.

  • "Moody Cow Meditates" by Kerry Lee MacLean - This book introduces children to the practice of meditation and mindfulness, promoting emotional balance and well-being.

  • “Outside In” by Deborah Underwood and Cindy Derby - We used this book in class to look at how we often become disconnected from nature and how nature calls us to reconnect. The illustrations are beautiful.

  • “My Heart Fills With Happiness” by Monique Gray Smith and Julie Flett is a book I used in some classes to help children recognize activities that make them feel balanced.

These activities help your family explore the attribute of balance together. Thank you for all you do to support your child at home as they become the best person they can be.
